Animation

Came across a basic animation studio for younger children that is based on open source tools. It seems to be freeware, rather than OSS though. My wife is going to use it as an additional tool for an after animation school class she runs for Key Stage 2 pupils at her school.

See http://www.fluxtime.com for more.

There is also http://moviesoup.co.uk/ which seems to have more functionality but seems to be under a more restrictive license.

Hi,

I've been playing with a package called Pencil that is open source and available from http://www.pencil-animation.org/ ,just to suggest an alternative. I would have thought it would be suitable for KS2, but haven't tried it with kids yet.

Synfig is worth investigating if you want to try something similar to Flash - I've used it with Y6 on Ubuntu thin clients in the past.

Folks might be interested to learn that Scratch is being allowed for Manchester University's UK Schools Computer Animation Competition, as are Alice and Greenfoot.

Yes, Synfig is very good although I would say the learning curve can be high, but if you follow the Flower Tutorial, it will work.

Stopmotion is a simpler "string some photo's together" application, which is very good.

Incidentally skolelinux (Norwegian for School Linux) is a good site for ideas in general.
