Benefits to Schools

Many schools are beginning to make good use of OSS. We’ve found that their most common reasons are:

• Saving money! Free is free, after all!   Some proprietary software can be expensive (particularly the specialist programs, like graphics and media). OSS may, for example, allow you to equip every machine in the media suite rather than just one or two.
• Re-using older equipment. (saving money again, really). The newer versions of Windows and applications such as Microsoft Office need powerful machines to run well. Older machines can be repurposed in a general workspace (the library, an internet café) and run basic software like a web browser and wordprocessor using OSS.
• Provide services that would otherwise be too expensive. Some proprietary software products can be very expensive. OSS is allowing some schools to explore “whole enterprise software” such as resource booking and timetabling services, helpdesk systems for ICT support.
• Providing alternatives to learners. Many ICT subject curricula require learners to understand both the varieties of software rather than just using a single suite. OSS also provides a way to understand the OSS community, one of the most influential developments in the world of ICT.

Choosing to use OSS shouldn’t be a simple “it’s free – let’s go for it!”. Issues such as user training and support and technical service maintenance (training for technical staff) need to be considered. And the fact that many proprietary products are available at special education rates for schools is also a factor.

There are also benefits other than straightforward cost – to the curriculum and administrative functions. OSS isn’t a simple choice, but it’s one that’s definitely worth considering
