Elgg Newbie: Can you stop external email registration?

I am the proud owner of a newborn elgg site. How I got in this situation- a little light music-too many glasses of wine and the mood just overtook me. Now its here I don't know what to do with it. I wish to use the site for my pupils ( primary)  but have hit upon the snag of the email registration. Are there ways to block it. If I can't do this I cannot see it being suitable for them. Any help would be fantastic.

Yes you can. There are ways to run elgg as a walled garden, there is a community group of walled gardeners. I have set up an elgg for my kids and their friends as a walled garden. There are some features I would like to see added to suppport primary age kids. I particularly wanted parental involvement as chaperones. The concept is that the child will have an account, as will the parent(s) and the parents will have special rights over their children and will be able to view their inbox and everything they do.

Iv'e done quite a lot of work with Elgg as I run http://primaryschoolteaching.co.uk -  Alan, you wanted to see user moderation?  Did you post it onto the Elgg community site as a request?

yes, I did have some discussions in the community area about this in the walled gardeners section and in another group. There was some interest but it would be quite a bit of work to implement it. I could do it, but I don't have the time, unless it was a funded project.
