A good file sharing application?

Hi all,

I am looking for a good File Sharing program to implement at my school.  I want it to be able to share files with teachers and students suchh as lessons, homework and grading. Also be able to save the files in a database.

Your suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Why not use Drupal? This web site shows how powerful it is but it can be used more simply. It is easy for individual users to upload files and share them. Sharing web pages with different levels of access is becoming more important as we move off the desktop. Really you want to share information rather than share files so Drupal and similar information sharing environments are the way forward in that respect. There is also Google docs. This enables you to share files, working spreadsheets and presentations and invite collaboration. Google is free of charge but not open source so from and Open Source point of view use Drupal -I actually use both, there is overlap but also individual strengths.

Not exactly software, but have a look at aoc.ssatrust.org.uk.  Its a CPD site created in partnership between the SSAT and Intel and is soon to be redeveloped in Moodle (Moodle version launch is september). It has a file and folder sharing and publishing system inside that allows multi-level folders, embedded links etc and is free to use.

You don't have to be affiliated to the SSAT and you can either use an SSAT Schools Network login or drop a request via the site and i will set up a login for you. If it looks like the sort of thing you need, let me know - the moodle version will be transferable in due course and we're looking at ways we can link it to school Learning Platforms   ;-)

Cheers

Your post nicely described some of the features of Moodle.  I'd try that if I were you.

Hi

It sounds like a Content Management System rather than a file-sharing system maybe better suited to what you need. I am biased but Plone would be perfect for what you need: www.plone.org  - you can download it on a windows or linux box and easily give it a try.

Cheers

certainly look at Moodle, possibly also Mahara which is more of a student filestore/eprofile application. A great but more generic file storing application would be Alfresco. This is a full document management system which is really strong on version control and workflow.

Although Moodle can do content management it is designed for courses. We use both Drupal and Moodle because while there is overlap each has strengths. If you want to set up free accounts in Drupal or Moodle you can do it at www.theingots.org to try them out. Use Courses login and community login. You will see that the commuity site is differently organised to the Schools Open Source site even though both are using Drupal. The INGOT site is more about learners making their own pages so they can learn how to make e-portfolios and blog their work and for collaborative work in different languages. See for example, http://www.theingots.org/community/pt/Comenius1Reports(pt)

Me too. We have 21 machines in our senior IT room, all of which have nice new 80GB SATA harddrives which are hardly used and we're running out of disk space on our central servers for things like video files and photos. We could do with something that lets us (reliably and securly) store our files in a distributed way but gives us local disk performance. I'm thinking something like a peer-to-peer file system of some kind - something that would look like a standard folder or mounted drive on a Windows machine, but might actually be stored accross a number of machines. Anyone know of a peer-to-peer "enterprise" type file-sharing application?

Never used openafs, but looks similar to MS dfs?

Just trying to figure out why the blazes I didn't come accross it before - it comes complete with a proper MSI installer and everything! Thanks for the reply, looks like it'll be just the thing.
