We have been using nagios for 3 years now to monitor Primary School Servers remotely, we use active checks to constantly monitor each specific part (even database versions of MIS') of the schools server.

All of the modules we have written are available on nagios-exchange.

If anyone gets stuck without a module for nagios and wants one custom written then let me know and I will be happy to help out.

We have done a lot in the way of SMS and event handlers too, 3 months ago we opened our service up to all technical support providers nationwide but had a very poor uptake.  We are currently limited to 2 servers per school so it is not suitable for many secondarys.
