JumpBox - OSS in a box!

I've just come across JumpBox via a Twitter message from Leon Cych. It describes itself thus:

JumpBox simplifies server software deployment with pre-built, pre-configured software applications for virtual computing platforms. A "JumpBox" packages an application's software, dependencies, and application data into a single ready to deploy virtual computer that saves you up to 70% of the time and cost associated with deploying traditional software.

With prices starting at $299 ($499 with support and Amazon EC2 hosting option) it looks like it could be a great solution for schools not wanting to be locked into the BSF one-vendor model! :-)

Yes I pay more than this for hosting of a Wordpress and Drupal alone with my ISP - just wondering if there are any hidden costs - if not then it does seem like an excellent solution - the LA could unlock just that one site - I'm wondering if this could be part of a bigger project to enable schools to share resources. Perhaps BECTA may think about this seriously - this does seem to be a serious option to circumnavigate lock down and well worth exploring as a pilot. There are many teachers like Doug who could showcase work using these tools. It's a VERY interesting development!

Nice, handy, but only if you run VMWare - we don't, we run open source Xen on top of CentOS as our virtualisation environment (then you get the live migration facility for free). It's not really any bother to install an Ubuntu VM, anyway, and most of these applications look pretty simple to install.
