Manual for teachers for open source/systems

IanL's picture

One of the things we are funded to do for the INGOT EU transfer of innovation project is produce a manual on Open Source/Open Systems for teachers. If anyone has any ideas for chapters, topics etc I'll pass them on to the Bulgarian partner who is managing that part of the project.

Groups:

Hey Guys,

I would require the same. As I need the same to start of the samefor in India.

here most of the advocate for MS paint, MS office and Windows!!

A detail with the study matter would have ben great!!

Regards,'

Aju Joseph

Ian,

I agree with Aju. An indication of the chapter headings to date would help people viewing your post decide on other entries so as not to repeat what you already have.

There aren't any. It's a completely blank sheet. The project does not officially start until October and the first project meeting is 12th - 16th October in Bulgaria. So any ideas about any of the manual are welcome. We do have a start on some courses related to FOSS applications but these will also be built up (again suggestions welcome) over the next two years.

This is a preview of a support course for the Schools ITQ. This is the UK National Vocational Qualification, the ITQ, adapted for schools so it covers the National Curriculum as well as the National Occupational Standards but also maps to the European Qualifications Framework. The course content supporting these qualifications will all be freely available to anyone anywhere in the world.

People,

My own view here is that, generally speaking, the move to Open Source requires some good reference points (or, more likely, comparisons) so that the journey of a thousand steps feels like the camping holiday you had last year, but in a different county, country or continent, depending on your experience.

Having been down this road before, my 'chapters' in the manual would look like this:

1. Where to start or, more correctly, where are you starting from?

This would need to cover the basics in terms of identifying: the kind of infrastructure currently deployed; the anthology of applications currently used within the set-up
; security etc. Getting the needs of the users (oand how to make sure that the impact on the users is kept to a minimum)

2. Where do you want to go, and how long have you got to get there?

Here, we would like to be thinking about the likely components necessary to, perhaps, 'mimic' what currently exists in the 'Microsoft World' and suggest some steps which can be taken to minimise the impact of any changes along the way.  In addition, some suggested 'bedding in' or tiral period for each change, depending on the urgency of the project.

3. Where to shop for Open Source Freeware

Suggestions of good examples of operating systems, software applications and tutorials which will make it easier to get to where we want to go.

4. One step at a time and stick to doing the simple things well

Advice on making the first and subsequent steps, suggesting hardware to suit the task in hand, installation of the operating system, 'finding your feet' etc. Offer some 'minimum steps' which should help to get you close to your destination with the minimum fuss.

That's all I have for the moment.  I hope it helps ...

Thanks,

All useful comments. Any more welcome. One issue is that if we produce a paer manual references and links can go out of date whereas a web manual is easier to up date. Probably we will do both Drupal can export pages as pdfs so that could be a solution.

That's a good list,

A reference section would perhaps be useful...

* There is quite a bit of data, research and policy documents that have been produced in the recent past. Gathering these (or links to the sources) would likely be a help when having to provide business-case or strategy papaers etc.

* List of FOSS service providers and support services. There is a growing collection of businesses either producing and supporting individual FOSS products or providing specialist FOSS consulting, and support services.

This kind of information would be most beneficial when held on-line with the ability for comments and updates.
