Simulate Gravity doesn't mean being able to walk to the shops like you're Neil Armstrong on the moon.  Its a clever application to model the gravitational effects of sub-atomic particles, so useful for Physics students perhaps but another of its selling points is that it "looks pretty"

Looking for an Opensource Equation Editor for Basic Math (for Mac)....

   Hi All,

I inquired about this a while back  and thought I should inquire again before I spend some $$$ on one. I am about to buy Math Magic for my Mac.

The OpenEducationDisc is a compendium of software produced with students from KS1-5 in mind.  Now published on a DVD, there is something here for everyone.  600 were produced for the BETT show and went like hot-cakes.

Practical Math applications suited for teaching?

Hi all,

I have posted on this topic before a few months ago and did not find what I am looking for so I thought I should post again.

I am looking for a practical Math app (ideally opensource), that I can use to make worsheets and exams. I am currently teaching unfortunate young Adults at a Nonprofit in the States. I teach 8th grade level Math. I cover everything from Basic Arithmetic thru Algebra, Geometry, Probability and Stats,

If you have any suggestions I would appreciate a link. Also, I am operating a Mac Ibook G4 OSX..

Thanks.

Sympl open source maths software

Sympl is a cross platform, open source maths application (www.sympl.org).

The current version can plot interactive graphs of various types. Graphs support control points, which users can click and drag to interact with the graph. Interaction is controlled by simple but flexible scripts. There are example scripts on the website.

The application is Java based, and can run on the desktop or as an applet on a web page.

Sympl is still at a very early stage, with plenty of plans for the future. I would welcome any comments or suggestions. Please also consider cross posting comments to the Sympl forums (http://www.sympl.org/forum).

Blending open-source development with constructionist learning

Session style:
Presentation

A perceived advantage of open source development of educational software is that it potentially allows teachers to make their own adaptations. This link between making software and learning is echoed in a constructionist approach, as proposed by Seymour Papert and pioneered through the use of Logo in schools, in which model-building activity is seen as the medium for developing domain understanding.

Ian Wild is author of the popular manual for teachers "Moodle Course Conversion: Beginner's Guide" and is currently writing a book on teaching mathematics online using Moodle.

Moodle is an open source e-learning tool that is very popular in schools and colleges. But selecting, installing and using the tools to make teaching mathematics in Moodle fast, fun and engaging is not child’s play.

OS Apps for teaching Math??

  Hi all,

I posted this in the 'Community' Area, thought it should have gone here.

I am teaching Math with a Nonprofit to underprivileged students (16-24 years old), and am looking for OS applications that could be used to formulate lesson plans and other useful Apps that can help me teach Math.  Additionally, I am looking for sites that are useful (provide free worksheets, etc.)

I am teaching Basic Arithmetic through Basic Geometry. I am preparing students for  an Adult Basic Proficiency Math Test.
