C&T is an eclectic company of drama professionals, technologists, teachers, web designers, animators and writers working with partner schools all over England to bring new, creative learning practice to students and teachers through a blend of drama, applied learning and digital technology.

Having identified the significant parallels between the behaviours of young people as digital natives (Prensky) and the hallmarks of Applied Theatre, C&T has developed a new practice: Networked Theatre. Networked Theatre is a medium for applied learning in any subject or context – it’s not about “putting on plays” but using a mix of participation, media and online technology to engage young people in purposeful, enjoyable learning.

C&T has built a sophisticated Drupal-based site, candtnetwork.org, which enables teachers and students to collaborate on shared, creative projects in the classroom, the community and the extended day.

Also, the extensibility of Drupal is opening up new creative avenues for C&T and our partner schools, including integrating handheld learning devices into the classroom, effective evaluation, public-facing sites for showcasing content and others.

The presentation will describe candtnetwork.org and some case studies of its use. Furthermore it will explain how Open Source software has been integral to the development of this way of working and how open source doesn’t just represent a technological opportunity to teachers, but one which can be a stimulus for creative teaching and learning.

The presentation is especially recommended for delegates interested in

  • Creative uses of ICT and open source software
  • Creative teaching and learning across the curriculum
  • Integration of ICT across the curriculum
  • Community cohesion
  • Extended day development
  • Teacher CPD
  • Reaching disengaged students.
