Open Source at BETT 2009

OLPC XO-1 laptopA recent email from Open Forum Europe draws attention to the large number of open source products and services featuring in this year's BETT education technology exhibition, at Kensington Olympia, 14-17th October. Together with The Open Learning Centre, Open Forum Europe are providing the 'Open Source Precinct' on stand SW104 at BETT, showcasing a number of projects, including:

  • Ubuntu CDs
  • Elgg spaces - hosted social networking
  • Linux based edcuational laptops and netbooks, including OLPC, Asus and Classmate
  • OpenOffice.org information and its own ECLD on-line training room
  • INGOTS, International Grades in Open Technologies
  • And, of course, Moodle, the leading open source virtual learning environment.

Elsewhere at BETT:

  • Equiinet  on E85 Equiinet uses Linux and Moodle and specialises in caching and content delivery, data backup, eLearning platforms and eSafety.
  • Zimbra on S46 a Yahoo! company, is the leader in open source, next-generation messaging and collaboration software.
  • Moodle – Synergy Learning, N2, are official moodle.com partners offering hosting, consultancy and training. Moodle hosting is also on offer from Synetrix (K10) and nlearning (G125), and
  • Sirius  D151, offering OSS solutions in the Becta Software Licensing Framework
  • European Electronique D85 offering OSS (and MS) solutions for schools
  • FutureLab – have a paper on FLOSS, as well as publications exploring innovation and social technology in education
  • Intel – with Classmate and Ubuntu
