OS Apps for teaching Math??

  Hi all,

I posted this in the 'Community' Area, thought it should have gone here.

I am teaching Math with a Nonprofit to underprivileged students (16-24 years old), and am looking for OS applications that could be used to formulate lesson plans and other useful Apps that can help me teach Math.  Additionally, I am looking for sites that are useful (provide free worksheets, etc.)

I am teaching Basic Arithmetic through Basic Geometry. I am preparing students for  an Adult Basic Proficiency Math Test.

Your suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Some of the best work is done using generic tools rather than specific maths applications, eg Inkscape for work on transformations and tiling, OpenOffice.org sheet for modelling, Scratch for elementary programming ideas. Geogebra is also very good and would be good for supporting your arithmetic through geometry approach; prepared sketches can be embedded in Moodle (or other VLEs) quite easily.

For assessment activities, Moodle quizzes work well, but more innovative practice would involve collaborative creation of wiki pages or recording screencasts to explain concepts using a screen recorder and a tablet PC or IWB.

Thanks Admin for your suggestions, I will check them out further.  What I am really looking for is something I can use instead of MS Word to formulate lesson plans.  I have used the Math app on Word to formulate lessons but it seems a bit too time consuming.  I am wondering if there is a more efficient App ( ideally, Open Source) where all I have to do is point and click on the symbols, shapes, etc., I need?

If you or anyone on here knows a good App, I would appreciate a link.

Thanks again!

OpenOffice has a Math compenent.

to use it I needed to un hide the menu item

or you can run this command

openoffice.org -math

I hope this is what you are looking for.

Thanks all.  But I am really looking for a math application where I can formulate lessons easily.  Also I am looking for a site that has a great deal of resources for lessons and resources in general.

By the way, I tried installing openoffice but was unable to.  I am running a Mac - ibook G4.

They only have the Intel version for the Mac.  I tried installing it ( version 3).  When I tried to open it after downloading I got a message that it does not support the program.  How else can I run open office?  Will I need to download an earlier version if it will be useful for me?

Thanks.

Anyone heard of any good ones lately??  Thanks.
