DoudouLinux is a system designed for children to make computer use as easy and pleasant as possible for them (and why not their parents too!). DoudouLinux provides tens of applications that suit children as soon as 2 years old and tries to give them an environment as easy to use as a gaming console.
DoudouLinux is also easy for parents. Available as an autorun CDROM, DoudouLinux does not need installing and does not touch neither data in the computer it runs onto, nor the system which is already installed on it. So you can carry it everywhere and let children on any computer without worrying. DoudouLinux can even be lent, offered, copied as you want and how you want, just as they do in the school playground! This is fully legal so that DoudouLinux is really risk free whatever the point of view.
Finally DoudouLinux also aims at making computers accessible to all children on earth, without any discrimination. For this reason DoudouLinux.org web site lets you download full and free versions and will always do. Moreover DoudouLinux is available in several languages so that each child would feel comfortable when he begins reading. DoudouLinux design is driven by the idea that computer users, supposing that they just use their computer (ie. they do not administrate), just have to easily access what they need for their job:
- start applications, which supposes that they are easy to find
- tune the mouse, tune the sound volume, eventually set the keyboard layout or change screen resolution
- connect some external devices such as an USB key or a printer
- access the previously saved work, of course
- connect to a network, for example the Internet
- switch on and off!
On the one hand intention was to inhibit or hide most of functionalities (dropping menus, icons on the desktop, contextual menus, file manager, etc.). On the other hand very young children (2-3 years old) do not understand the role of the mouse and even less the keyboard role. Therefore it is not judicious to put them in an environment in which you have to choose what you want to do among 50 applications!
DoudouLinux is freely available for download in full version and without any use restriction! To make it run a PC or Macintosh computer is required with 256 MB memory and 800 MHz processor inside (see Recommended configuration). To determine which version to download, you need to choose:
- the support type to be used (CDROM or USB key)
- the CDROM or USB key language
Web-site of the project is doudoulinux.org.

Any external control interface support?
Kinect, visual, multi touch surfaces etc?
I would struggle justifying introducing children to a keyboard/mouse type interface when it is quite possible that wont be their preferred control method in the future.
Touch screens and Kinect type technologies offer all sorts of possibilities for younger kids to benefit from computers. They are also potentially better than a keyboard and mouse for many tasks.
But I think you are being a bit optimistic if you think keyboards will have disappeared by the time today's toddlers are old enough to plagiarise their first wikipedia article. Is there any viable alternative for entering significant amounts of text?
I can't see that picking up keyboard skills would be a waste of time. At least until brain-computer interfacing matures.
I'm always the optimist and sure I don't think its a waste of time, I just want it :P
