Software Project Hosting

How about providing a hosting service for software development aimed specifically at UK schools.

I like the idea.

Technically, I'm sure it's something we could do, but would there be sufficient demand to make it worthwhile?

What sort of functionality would be necessary? Are there things that developers would need that Sourceforge doesn't provide?

I have just registered a new project on Scourceforge today and it worked really well from both Linux and Windows using svn:// and https://  https is important to allow access behind the firewall and proxy from school.

I do hope to use this site to promote my project, but not sure what could be added by hosting the source code on the site directly.

Some of the educational support forums are now very heavily sponsered by commercial backers and it would help to have free voice to promote open source projects on a site that would conflict less with the sponsors :)

There are plenty of free hosting services, like Sourceforge suggested above, that I'm not sure it would be worth the effort of this project in doing so.
