My apologies for the spam comments that are likely to have appeared in your in-box this morning.
We had, naively, allowed unregistered users to post to the site by just passing a captcha test. I've now set permissions so that unregistered users' comments go into an approval queue. I'll investigate Drupal's other anti-spam measures over half term, but hopefully this should keep things along the straight and narrow for now.
Miles.

Hello, Miles,
Grab either Mollom or Akismet -- Mollom is the first tool I'd recommend looking at.
Also, an aside: I just logged in via OpenID and received this error message:
Table 'm' is marked as crashed and should be repaired ...While I'm not sure what "table 'm'" is, you might want to do an optimize/repair on your db.
Cheers,
Bill

Thanks for this Bill.
I've installed Mollom, so this is a test to see how it works! With Mollom in place, do you (or others here) think we should moderate unregistered users' comments?
Whilst I don't pretend to understand OpenID, Table 'm' doesn't appear to exist in this database, and I've managed to log-in OK with a yahoo.com OpenID. Any further advice gratefully received!
Miles.
