Sad news...

Open Source Schools was saddened to learn of the tragic death on Friday 17th July of Richard Rothwell, founding father and guiding light of the UK's open source in education community and chair of Schoolforge-UK.

"For us the world is a sadder and lonelier place without him, and the rest of the world has lost one of its brightest stars. He will remain in our thoughts and hearts forever."

Learning to program with Linux

Birmingham University's Prof Aaron Sloman has been exploring ways of providing an environment for school students interested in learning about programming and AI under Linux, as part of the Computing At Schools project. This might well be of interest to schools who would like to facilitate collaboration between their students and those studying elsewhere, as well as those who are hesitant about providing their own Linux box for students to work on.

Sugar on a Stick

At the Sugar Camp event in Paris last weekend, Caroline Meeks related to me her observations of the Sugar 'experience' in schools. Put simply (and, I hope, accurately!), she said that teachers and pupils were wowed by the simplicity and intuitive nature of the interface and system, in a way that she had not seen with mainline distributions of Linux.

Summer 2009 will take place at the Birmingham Conservatoire from Friday 7th to Sunday 9th August. The conference this year will have a choice of conference streams, and we are particularly keen to get other groups and projects involved.
