Edubuntu IRC presentation this evening at 19:00

Ubuntu Open week is a series of presentations and Q&A sessions on a variety of topics, it uses the IRC freenode network to host them, IRC is a fantastic communication medium, kind of more focussed than Twitter, but more open than instant messaging and more chatty than a web forum. You can read more about open week and the full schedule here

Edubuntu is Ubuntu's education focussed edition, it includes sets of free applications with an educational focus for different age groups. It also has a focus on manageability in a school environment and can be run as a terminal server to thin clients and regular computers. This talk is about the new features of Edubuntu and will no doubt cover the future directions. If you miss the event the logs will be posted here afterwards.

My experience with OSS introduction.

Rather than reproduce it here. Please see this article "An implementation of Open Source software in a secondary school. " on the Staffordshire Linux User Group web site: http://www.staffslug.org.uk/?p=95

A technician's view

By Russell Eales. Russell is based at John Port school in South Derbyshire, and supports a number of primary schools’ ICT services.

In my role as Community ICT Technician for a local Technology college, I give support to 12 local primary schools, installing and repairing hardware, installing and configuring software, setting up wired and wireless networks and designing websites. I also provide product advice, training and lesson support – so basically I'm kept fairly busy!

Current use in schools

This article reflects the experiences and findings of the project team in the early part of the project. We make no claim that it is a representative sample. We hope you will add to the range and substance, through comments, postings in the Forum and perhaps by submitting a Case study, and the article will be updated in due course to incorporate extra material.

Low-cost ICT across the curriculum at Tralee Primary

Starting with a computer made from recycled parts by 8-11 year olds and a copy of Edubuntu, this County Kerry school with a diverse catchment and a comitment to child centred education has massively expanded its curriculum IT provision, making extensive use of open source software.

Why as an educator you should care about Open Source Software

I posted the following on my website (dougbelshaw.com) entitled Why as an educator you should care about Open Source Software:

I’ve been invited to be part of a Becta project into Open Source Software (OSS). “What is OSS?” I hear you ask. A Google define: open source software search does a reasonable job, but for the layperson something a bit closer to home is needed. In a strange way, using OSS is a bit like buying Fairtrade products. Most people don’t see the direct results of their choice: they’re a water droplet in a beneficial deluge.
