Originally a secondary school teacher in Leicestershire, I then worked in the Caribbean on an access programme for adults before returning to the UK to complete a Masters Degree in Curriculum Design and Evaluation at Sussex University. I spent the majority of my subsequent career working at the University of Oxford Delegacy of Local Examinations, managing a range of innovative projects. These included working with groups of teachers in four LEAs to develop what was, for its time, a sophisticated process of recording of achievement; extending the Delegacy’s expertise into the commercial sector, through the assessment and validation of in company training programmes; and establishing a small Awarding Body for Management and Project Management NVQs.
Following the advent of unitary examination bodies, I began to work as an educational consultant with a group of fellow former teachers and assessment and qualification specialists. In 2003 this group became AlphaPlus Consultancy Ltd, of which I am a Director. In more recent years we have been joined by people with expertise in educational technology thus enabling us to engage with projects such as Open Source Schools which blend collaborative educational philosophies with educational technologies to enhance teaching and learning experiences.
