What licence to use?

I'm looking for some advice about which licence to release a project under.

I have created modules for moodle which allow it to be integrated with SIMS.net. The project is starting to take off and im looking a way to generate fund to sustain the project.

I have previously released a different type of module under glp3 which has then been used by commercial companies who have charged schools a lot of money to implement this module which is allowed.

There have been requests for support the previous modules but this isn't possible as there is no income to sustain it.

With my new project i will like to generate an income to fund development to comply with the becta 2010 requirements.

The problem is what is the best licence to use for this project that will allow an income to be generated?

Ideally i would like two licences one educational and one commercial (ie applies to companies selling to schools), the project will be open source. Education licensees will be able to modify the code for internal use only, commercial companies wont be able to do this.

My main goal is to get more people using moodle and sims.net not to make money.

you help will be greatly appreciated

I'm not familiar with moodle, but based on your description I would suggest CC-BY-NC: creative commons attribution non-commercial.

This allows free:

- copying, and

- modification

but not:

- commercial use

and requires you to be attributed as the author.

you can then additionally sell commercial licenses as you wish.

Would it help to use Attribution, Non-commercial, Share alike (BY NC SA) to prevent someone developing your work and then selling that development commercially? Share alike should force someone who re-shares your work to do so on the same terms.
