Wikipedia and its sister projects have a large amount of content that can be useful for teachers. This session could cover:

– using Wikipedia content in class notes etc – what’s available and how should I cite?

– encouraging your students to use Wikipedia for their homework

– help! My school’s access to Wikipedia is blocked – what should I do?

– child-friendly static offline versions of Wikipedia

– anything else the participants would like

A plugins ecosystem for schools Management Information Systems

Writing a complete, monolithic Management Information System (MIS) for a school is a large undertaking. MIS’ are the very definition of "enterprise software" – the dull but neccesary applications that take up the bulk of programming effort worldwide. Replacing an existing MIS would take time and programming effort.

Open Source Solutions – Braeburn Schools, Nairobi

Braeburn is a group of International schools based in Nairobi, Kenya. It has several sister schools around East Africa that offer the British National Curriculum. Technology for learning, or ‘blended learning’ has been adopted using Moodle.

Elgg Newbie: Can you stop external email registration?

I am the proud owner of a newborn elgg site. How I got in this situation- a little light music-too many glasses of wine and the mood just overtook me. Now its here I don’t know what to do with it. I wish to use the site for my pupils ( primary)  but have hit upon the snag of the email registration. Are there ways to block it. If I can’t do this I cannot see it being suitable for them. Any help would be fantastic.

Mahara individual learning profile store needs feedback on copyright

The Mahara e-profile store which plugs in to Moodle is a great way to provide all learners with a profile of all their achievements.

It is GPLv3 licensed and there are no proposed changes to that, however they are deciding what to do about the copyright of contributions. This is an important issue and is explained in detail in a post to the Mahara forums.

Open Source programs for G&T competitive event

I have been charged with running the ICT stream of the Teach First Mind Games 2009.  This is competition for Year 7-9 G&T students from schools across the country.  The day will be split into 3 * 1 hour slots and I’m trying to think of how we could put together an interesting set of activities that would teach the children something and allow us to rank them along the lines of

Open content, open standards and open source, a look at the national digital resource bank from ethos to implementation.  Getting resources into learning platforms can sometimes be difficult, sharing resources between learning platforms is nearly impossible, this has created many new barriers to schools and teachers sharing the resources that they have created themselves.
